Breeders of Finnish Lapphunds

(Suomenlapinkoira)

in Alberta, Canada

Although a popular breed in Fenno-Scandinavia, Finnish Lapphunds are just beginning to appear in North America. Finnish Lapphunds are a highly intelligent, energetic, loving animal originally bred as reindeer herders, general working dogs, and family companions.

Like many herding and working dogs, Lappies require stimulation to keep them happy.   For an active person, couple, or family they are an ideal and rewarding companion. They are highly intelligent, have a sense of humour, and can amuse you to no end. They have the intelligence and vitality of their spitz ancestors, combined with an eagerness to please humans -- a rare and beautiful combination.

As a result of being bred for purpose and not solely colour, the range of possible colours found in this breed is enough to suit almost any taste.  Black with variations on tan facial and body markings are most common, followed by wolf sable. Finnish Lapphunds can be found in varying shades of brown, creme, red, wolf sable, and sable, ranging from solid colours, to varying degrees of markings.  Their stocky, robust body type, friendly fox eared expression, and winning temperament are what comprise the breed standard.

Stunning, solid, confident, energetic, intelligent, affectionate!

This northern breed display a rich, dense double coat that comes in many colours.  Pictured above clockwise:  CAN Ch Shadagrace Bolt Lightning (Black with tan markings), CAN Ch Peikkovouren Ruska (Black), Yutori’s SuomiFoxFire O’Bearspaw (Black with tan markings) and Sugarok Koda (Wolf-sable).
